Britannia Holdings

Britannia Holdings is a long established art dealership, based in the historic town of Beverley, England.

We have operated for 30 years from a tasteful early 18th Century, (Circa 1710) Queen Anne 3-story building, in the shadow of Beverley's famous cathedral, the Beverley Minster: one of the leading examples of late gothic architecture in the world.

The Gallery is located at far end of shops shown on left in front of the Cathedral.

The business is administered by Robert O. Schmitt and James H. Starkey, and from the early days when just a few academic collectors were catered for, we now cater for a much wider world market with clients at all price levels. Our aim is to encourage not only all would be collectors but also the one-time purchaser wishing to find something a little special for that particular wall.

James Starkey was educated at the oldest private boarding school in England St. Peter's, York, founded in the year AD 627. He left school and went to Trinity College, Dublin, to pursue a career in medicine but later changed courses to an arts course that encompassed the fine arts and left university with an M.A. degree.

James Starkey has spent 30 years traveling the world visiting museums, collectors and businesses, and has also been instrumental in building the careers of some of the world's leading marine artists notably Stephen Dawes and Stephen Renard whose works now appear in leading salesrooms of the world selling for up to $100,000.

Our team will be pleased to answer any queries concerning paintings and works of art, and thanks to the Internet, distance is no object!
