WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS
9:00 AM. "The Depthing Tool." Richard Ketchen's presentation will be on the depthing tool. He will cover the history, correct use, accuracy, accessories, and some unconventional uses. He will bring examples of the tools and demonstrate their uses. Richard Ketchen has been in the clock repair business for more than forty years covering most aspects of restoration from simple cleanings to complete replacement of missing wheel trains. He won the NAWCC Gold Medal for Craftsmanship in 1980 and is a Fellow of the NAWCC. Richard is an avid collector of horological books and tools.
10:30 AM. "The Long Productive Life of John Roger Arnold." Tom McIntyre's presentation concerns John Roger Arnold, the son of John Arnold who, along with Thomas Earnshaw, is credited with the invention of the spring detent escapement for marine chronometers. John Roger was a significant influence on both the Frodsham and Dent watch and clockmaking enterprises. Since being elected 2nd VP in 2003, Tom has been serving on the NAWCC Board of Directors. Following the reorganization of the NAWCC, he was elected Director in 2005 and was appointed Director and elected Treasurer in 2009.
12:00 Noon. Luncheon
12:45 PM. "Watches for Clock Collectors." Tom Grimshaw will give a presentation about why clock collectors should be interested in watches, given the technical and developmental aspects of the industry. As a clock collector, Tom took the time to understand that watchmaking is a more complex process than clockmaking. There were a number of trials and tribulations associated with the start of mass production of watches in MA (rather than CT), and involve the Willard brothers to some degree. Tom is an engineering graduate of the Univ. of Michigan. He is well known to our membership as having been published in the Bulletin, and has given more than 80 presentations at chapter and regional meetings and National conferences through the years. Tom is currently the curator of the ACWM in Bristol, CT.
